How to Choose a 500 kW Industrial Inverter for a Solar Plant in Africa

Specifying a 500 kW inverter for an African solar plant is, in most respects, the same job as specifying one for a Polish one. The grid is mostly 50 Hz. The inverter is still 380 V or 400 V three-phase. The PV array is still strings of modules. Five practical differences, though, shape the buying decision.

Those differences are: ambient temperature (derate above 40 deg C), grid code (each African country has its own), transport weight (a 500 kW cabinet is heavy), service access (the longest lead-time item on a warranty claim is usually the customs paperwork, not the spare part), and the DC voltage of the modules you actually installed.

1. Match the DC voltage, not the label power

Inverter labels tell you AC output power. What actually matters for sizing is the MPPT input voltage window relative to your string design. A 500 kW inverter with an MPPT window of 600–1500 V DC will run at 80% nameplate if your strings sit at 800 V under STC. The honest number on the nameplate is the AC side; the honest number for the project is "how many kW of DC does the array actually deliver".

Ask the seller for the inverter efficiency curve at three points: 25%, 50%, and 100% of nameplate. If you do not get a curve back, you are dealing with marketing.

2. Get the ambient derate right

A 500 kW inverter in a Namibian desert will not produce 500 kW in October at noon. The cabinet has a thermal limit. A cabinet rated for 50 deg C continuous will run at 480 kW. A cabinet rated for 45 deg C will run at 460 kW. The 4% – 8% gap is the project margin that disappears without a number on the datasheet.

3. Confirm the grid code, not the brochure

The grid codes that matter on the African continent today are the South African NRS097-2-1, the Kenyan KS-EAS-189, the Ghanaian ECG-LV, and the Nigerian NEMSA grid tie. Each one specifies low-voltage ride-through, anti-islanding, and reactive-power behaviour. A cabinet that ships CE to Europe is not automatically compliant with NRS097. Ask for the certificate number for the specific country, not the family.

4. Make the cabinet serviceable on site

In a 500 kW inverter, the parts that wear out are the fans and the DC capacitors. Both should be replaceable without sending the cabinet back to the factory. If the cabinet requires a forklift and a dry room to service, it is a kitchen appliance, not an industrial product.

5. Look at the warranty paperwork, not the warranty words

A five-year warranty is standard. What matters is whether the warranty covers the spare parts, the labour to replace them, and the freight to ship the parts to site. A warranty that is "limited" without those three line items is three months of cover dressed up as five years.
